The owner, not a call centre

Twenty-two years, one set of hands.

When you book at Pete's, Pete is the one who looks at your car. There's no service advisor upselling from a script and no rotating cast of apprentices learning on your brakes.

The short version

Meet Pete

Red Seal Certified Automotive Service Technician. Twenty-two years in the trade. Owner and lead hand at Pete's Muffler & Automotive on Malcolm Rd.

Pete started the way most good mechanics do โ€” sweeping floors and pulling wheels at a busy Guelph shop while he apprenticed. He earned his 310S licence, then went after the Red Seal endorsement: the interprovincial standard that means the ticket is recognised in every province in Canada and the exam wasn't something you talk your way through.

He spent the middle years of his career on exhaust benches and diagnostic bays โ€” the two areas of the trade where guessing costs the most money. That's where the shop's character came from. Exhaust taught him to fix the failed section instead of selling the whole assembly. Diagnostics taught him that a fault code is where you start looking, not where you stop.

He opened Pete's Muffler & Automotive with one rule taped to the wall in his head: never sell someone a repair you wouldn't put on your own mother's car. That rule is why the shop measures brake pads in front of the customer, why every repair gets photographed, and why "that can wait until fall" is a sentence people actually hear here.

Credentials & capability

What the ticket actually means

"Certified" gets thrown around a lot in this industry. Here's the specific version.

๐ŸŽ–๏ธ

Red Seal Endorsement

The interprovincial standard for Automotive Service Technician. Earned by exam on top of the provincial 310S licence, and recognised in every Canadian province and territory.

๐Ÿ“œ

Ontario 310S Licence

The compulsory trade certificate required to legally repair motor vehicles in Ontario. Maintained in good standing, with continuing education on newer systems.

๐Ÿญ

Licensed Inspection Station

Authorised to perform Ontario Safety Standards inspections and issue certificates for private sales, imports and re-registrations.

๐Ÿ”ฅ

Exhaust Fabrication

Mandrel bending, MIG welding, flange fabrication and full custom system design โ€” in-house, which is why we can repair sections other shops can only replace whole.

๐Ÿ”ฌ

Diagnostic Equipment

Bi-directional scan tools, live data logging, smoke machine, oscilloscope and pressure testing. The tools that turn a guess into an answer.

๐Ÿš—

What rolls through the bay

Domestic, Japanese and European, plus hybrids and light-duty diesel. Everyday commuters, work trucks, farm vehicles and the occasional weekend project.

How we operate

Five rules the shop actually runs on

Show, don't tell

If we say your rotors are worn, you get the measurement. If we say your exhaust is rotted through, you get the photo. Trust is built with evidence, not adjectives.

Now, soon, or watch it

Every finding gets one of three ratings. "Now" means safety. "Soon" means budget for it. "Watch it" means we'll look again next visit. Most shops only have one category and it's always "now."

The quote is the price

You approve a written estimate before a wrench moves. If we open something up and find more, we stop and call. You will never pick up a bill you haven't already seen.

Repair beats replace

Especially on exhaust. If a section can be cut out and welded properly, that's what we do โ€” because that's what we'd do to our own vehicle, and because a $250 repair beats a $1,400 assembly.

Answer fast, in plain English

Thirty minutes on every request, with a quote attached. No jargon walls, no "well, your solenoid pack has an intermittent duty cycle fault." We'll tell you what broke, what it costs and what happens if you wait.

The shop

Malcolm Rd, Guelph

A working shop, not a showroom. Clean bays, good lighting, and a waiting area with coffee that's better than it has any right to be.

In the community

Guelph's our whole customer base

We don't advertise on billboards in Toronto. Almost everyone who walks in was sent by someone who walked in before them.

That changes how you run a shop. A national chain can burn a customer and never see the consequence. In a city this size, every job either earns a referral or costs you three. Which is a long way of saying: the incentives here are already aligned with doing it right.

  • Serving Guelph, Rockwood, Fergus, Elora, Puslinch, Aberfoyle and Cambridge
  • Fleet and small-business accounts welcome
  • Student and senior consideration on labour โ€” just ask
  • Honest pre-purchase inspections for used-car buyers
Read what people say โ†’
Customer waiting area at Pete's Muffler with the services board listing brakes, tire rotation, muffler and exhaust, tune-up, engine repair and oil and filter

The board says it plainly โ€” and so does the sign asking for a Google review.

Come see whether the reviews are right.

Start with something small โ€” an oil change, a safety, a second opinion on a quote you don't trust. That's how most of our regulars started.
